Built on a high hill, in a picturesque environment and in an extremely strategic position, the Castle rises above the city as well as over the deep valley of Lumëbardhi and the Dukagjini plain. The castle has its origins in the first period of civilization of this region, in prehistory, with a continuous development in the Byzantine and Ottoman period. It was used exclusively as a castle until 1912. The castle is now significantly damaged and is on the World Heritage sites in Danger.
Prizren Castle contains an important part of the ancient history of the city. Its topographic position, dominant over the city, very attractive natural landscape and well thought out architectural configuration make this object with indisputable archeological, historical and tourist values.
It is located in the eastern part of the city on a conical hill, 525 m high. above sea level. The fortification walls follow the isohypses of the terrain, enclosing an area of about 1.5 ha in approximately oval shapes with a north-south extension.
