Gracanica locality and municipality on the outskirts of Pristina, the capital of Kosovo. Gracanica is a town and settlement and municipality in the eastern part of Kosovo. The municipality of Gracanica is one of three Serb-majority municipalities and borders on municipalities such as Prishtina and Lipjan.
Gracanica was built on the ruins of the old 13th century church of the Holy Virgin, which is built on the ruins of an early 6th century basilica.
The proper Gracanica is said to contain about 11,006 inhabitants, many of whom turned to Serb refugees from Pristina. Various estimates exist for the enclave as a whole, ranging from 13,000 to 30,000 inhabitants in the 15 villages that make up the enclave, and down from 120,000 in 1999. The enclave has a radius of about ten kilometers in which Serbs enjoy freedom of movement and the effort to organize a meaningful life for themselves.
